Some of our favorite menu items begin with a memory.
We discovered Nomad Whisky while traveling to Spain for our cousin's wedding. Our Italian cousin married a wonderful woman from Spain, and the trip became a celebration of family, friendship, and the connections that bring people together from around the world.
While in Spain, we came across a bottle of Whiskey that had a unique journey.

The whisky begins its journey in Scotland before traveling to Jerez, Spain, where it is finished in Pedro Ximénez (PX) sherry casks—oak barrels that once held one of Spain's richest dessert wines. During this final stage, the whisky takes on notes of dried fruit, vanilla, warm spice, and a hint of caramel sweetness, creating a remarkably smooth and distinctive finish.
When we returned home, we knew we wanted to share that discovery with our community.
To showcase Nomad, we chose one of the world's most enduring cocktails—the Old Fashioned. First popularized in the late 1800s, it has remained a favorite for generations. Its timeless combination of whiskey, bitters, sugar, and citrus has endured for well over a century, proving that sometimes the simplest recipes become the classics.
Our Nomad Old Fashioned honors that tradition while celebrating the whisky's remarkable journey—from Scotland to Spain, and finally to our café in Illinois. Smoked just before serving, the drink takes on another layer of warmth and complexity, making every sip an experience.
At the Wandering Whistler Cafe, every item on our menu has a story. Sometimes it's inspired by family traditions. Sometimes it's connected to our travels. And sometimes it's a reminder that the best discoveries are the ones shared with friends.
Here's the finishing touches on one of our favorite cocktails—and one of our favorite memories. Cheers to family, community, and finding inspiration wherever the journey takes you.

A Toast to our Upcoming Event and Drumstrang's Champion
As we prepare for our upcoming Harry Potter Birthday Celebration, we can't help but imagine which witches and wizards might enjoy our favorite cocktails.
We like to think Viktor Krum would appreciate our Smoked Nomad Old Fashioned. Like Krum himself, the cocktail is bold, well-traveled, and quietly confident. The smoke complements the whisky's subtle peaty character from its Scottish origins, while the influence of Pedro Ximénez sherry casks adds balance, smoothness, and notes of dried fruit and caramel—creating a cocktail that's both powerful and remarkably refined.
Much like the whisky's own journey from Scotland to Spain, Krum's story took him far from home, from Durmstrang Institute to the Triwizard Tournament at Hogwarts. We think that makes this cocktail a fitting tribute to one of the wizarding world's most memorable international champions.
