Why Boardgames Make a Great First Date

Have an important date coming up? Do you wonder "Where can we go where we can actually get to know each other?"

First dates can be exciting... and just a little nerve-racking.

What do you talk about? Will there be any awkward silences? What if the conversation stalls before the appetizers arrive? Believe it or not, one of our favorite date stories is our first date.

Wes and I met through mutual friends after attending a friend's birthday celebration. A little while later—on Valentine's Day—he sent me a message on Facebook asking if I was seeing anyone. After we talked for a bit, he asked me out.

I'll admit, I wasn't immediately convinced. Thankfully, my mom encouraged me to give this "Wes guy" a chance. When he picked me up for our first date, he showed up with flowers and took me to dinner. Like most first dates, we started with the usual questions—where we worked, what we enjoyed doing, and the best hiking spots in Chattanooga.

When Wes told me he worked for his grandfather, I remember thinking that was pretty heartwarming. Then he casually added that one day he was late for work... and his grandfather fired him.

We both laughed.

It wasn't the story I expected, but it broke the ice immediately. From that point on, the conversation felt effortless, and what could have been an awkward first date became one of my favorite memories.

Board Games Take the Pressure Off

Not everyone has a funny story, but thankfully at the cafe we have a large demo board game library. And Board games help take the pressure off.

A board game gives you something to do together while you get to know one another. Instead of feeling like every second has to be filled with conversation, the game naturally creates moments to laugh, ask questions, celebrate small victories, and discover each other's personalities.

Years later, you probably won't remember every question you asked on a first date.

But you'll remember the game where one of you made an unexpected comeback, solved the impossible clue, or couldn't stop laughing over a ridiculous moment.

Those shared experiences become part of your story.

One of our favorite things about board game cafés is that the evening doesn't have to end after dinner.

Start with a game.

Order dinner when you're ready.

If the conversation is flowing, move out to the patio for cocktails, mocktails, or coffee and enjoy the rest of the evening together.

Sometimes the best dates aren't the ones packed with activities—they're the ones where you never feel rushed.

Whether it's your first date, your fiftieth, or simply a chance to spend quality time together, we'd love to welcome you to Wandering Whistler Café.

Choose a game from our library, enjoy a meal, and let the conversation happen naturally.

Who knows? It might just become one of your favorite stories to tell.

We often see first dates unfold across our game tables. Some couples stay for a single game. Others lose track of time, order another drink, and head out to the patio to continue talking. There's no timer on a good conversation, and we like it that way.
